Growing up in the 70s came with all sorts of perks, not including "sitting in the car" while your mother spent hours digging through a random stranger's personal belongings at a garage sale. No, what I'm talking about is fashion, and no matter how many years go by, I still find myself clinging to retro style.
Several years ago, while scouring the internet for seventies apparel, a pair of boots caught my eye. At first glance, they appeared to be vintage because I remember having a pair just like them in elementary school, but after clicking the link, it was evident that this pair was brand spanking new. They were also $125.
I spent the next few months stalking retailers, hoping to find a better price or coupon code, but that never happened. Eventually, I gave up my search and forgot all about them. But guess what? I just found NOSTALGIA ON AMAZON. That said, winter is coming. Step aside, UGG (temporarily little buddy, you'll always be my #2), MOON BOOTS are about to give you a run for your money. Well, MY money actually, but still...
Tecnica has been making MOON BOOTS since the early seventies —when Giancarlo Zanatta, a young bootmaker from Montebelluna, Italy, came to New York City and witnessed the live broadcast of the first moon landing on television. Moved by the experience, he sketched out one of the most memorable designs in footwear history. Original Moon Boots (shown below) landed on July 20, 1969. Since then, the company has adapted to change by altering colors and tweaking their artwork, but they've never strayed from the initial design loved by so many people. The only problem: those living in the USA — die-hard fans who refuse to grow up — did not have internet back then, so when retailers stopped selling them here, many of us had no idea they were still in existence.
Here's what I can tell you, based on experience: aside from UGG and Mou Eskimo Boots, Moon Boots are the warmest, most comfortable pair of shoes I have ever owned, and I cannot wait to get my hands on a new set —for myself and my daughter. One of my favorite memories as a child was the elevated feeling from bouncing around in those boots. My only complaint is that the pair my mother bought me was yellow (my least favorite color). I'm still mad at her for not getting the rainbow ones above.
If you're looking for a weather-resistant, sturdy pair of shoes this winter, these nylon, insanely padded boots (with unique laces and kickass colors) are the walk back in time you need. And no, they didn't pay me or send a FREE pair (hint) to say that, but I wouldn't kick them to the curb if they did.
Got kids? Be a pal and get them (and yourself) a pair this winter. I promise they will LOVE them, and you will love me, forever. To view designs and colors, visit their website at moonboot.com. Feel free to tell them who sent you. Who knows, maybe they'll throw a bone my way and send me THESE! Or, even better, hook a mother up with those vintage rainbow beauties from 1974!
