If you're one of those people who needs to work out for mental endurance, but is afraid to because you don't want to catch 'the rona,' then I'm sure you've already figured out at least six different ways to make good use of pandemic isolation. For me, that meant biking—until I blew out my knee climbing murder hill.
Skipping my daily bike ride was killing my psyche, but my weak old knees were begging for a break, and I knew if I didn't stop, things would worsen. To add fuel to the flames, a few of my friends with normal-sized houses started sharing photos of their new home gyms on Facebook. The best I could do was a rolled-up yoga mat and a couple of 5-lb weights. Last week, I tried yoga for the first time in twenty years, and nearly choked on drool. It's not for everyone, but I needed to figure out something because the circulation in my legs was getting weak from sitting on my ass all day. After sharing my frustration with a friend, she told me what her mother did to combat a similar problem. She said she bought an "under-the-desk bicycle" to use at the office. Did you catch that? A bicycle that goes UNDER your desk! What?! That afternoon, I jumped online to find the best bang for my buck, narrowing my selection down to two different models: DeskCycle 2 and Stamina Inmotion Elliptical. While both had excellent reviews and were moderately stylish, I ultimately chose to go with the Stamina Inmotion because it seemed like a better fit for my space and a smoother ride. I've been peddling every day since—while working—and LOVING IT. Not only does it help with poor circulation, peddling while scrolling social media allows me to burn off pent-up anger (and calories) without losing time, which is something I could never do on a bike. Even more thrilling, I clocked a solid five miles today while cleaning up my website, and no kidding; my legs were rubber when I stood up. Even so, nothing in life is perfect. The model I purchased was "used" because I wanted the orange one and no one else had it in stock. It started making a slight rubbing noise last night, but after spraying a few drops of WD-40 on the wheels, everything seems to be fine. UPDATE: When the squeaking returned and worsened the next day, we assumed there was a problem with the hydraulics, but it turned out the noise was coming from the wheels picking up dirt and rubbing against the metal frame. A quick wipe with a soft cloth did the trick. I've had no problems since. I love it so much, in fact, that I'm ordering a new one for my eighth grade "virtual learner" as we speak. As a side note, you can also use these bad boys while sitting on the couch watching tv. Now you have NO excuse to put on extra COVID pounds, and you're welcome!
